PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
General Information and Class Procedure
The Physical Education Department program is interested in developing each student totally through the mediums of physical activity, in mental concentration, for emotional well being, and in the personal-social aspect of getting along with others in the program. We will develop a better-fit student, establish fitness habits, and learn how to maintain our fitness level that we desire.
REQUIRED PARTICIPATION AND DRESS
Students at Northwest High school are required to participate in physical education. Students are additionally required to dress in shirt, shorts, socks, and tennis shoes. Shorts should not be cut off jeans and all clothing will have no advertising of alcohol, tobacco, etc. (school policy). Due to the spread of skin disease, the only skin above the waist that should be visible is the student’s head, neck and arms. Students should mark each part of their physical education uniform so that if it gets misplaced, it can be returned to the proper person.
Personal hygiene is important therefore, students are asked to shower following each day’s activities. Students will need to bring a towel and any other shower items s as needed in plastic containers (shampoo, soap, and cologne/perfume).
Refusal to participate results in zero point and detention after school the same or following day.
ACTIVITY RESTRICTION AND/OR MODIFICATION
Well enough to be in school --- Well enough to participate, with a few exceptions. A student’s activity may need to be modified or restricted, but this can only be done through a written note from their medical practitioner, (MD, Nurse Practitioner or Physician’s Assistant). A parent or guardian may request that activity be restricted or modified for their child for a period of one day. If any injury requires that activity be restricted or modified for longer that one day, a medical practitioner’s note is required. Please make sure the certified medical note is specific in nature when it comes to the restrictions that need to be placed on the student’s physical activity along with the number of days the must be placed on them. We will then differentiate the training by honoring those restrictions, yet giving the opportunity to still earn full credit. In rare circumstances that a doctor restricts the student from all physical activity for a number of days, an alternative assignment(s) will be given to the student in order for him/her to still receive credit for the day. Once again, this must be provider by a medical expert only.
CLASS CONDUCT (Behavior, Equipment Use, and Gum/Candy)
All students are expected to follow the rules as set forth in the student/parent handbook as well as those presented here by the Physical Education Department. Students are expected to give proper care towards equipment and will be expected to pay for any damage they may cause through misuse. Gum, candy, and jewelry are should not be in physical education class. If worn during activities, jewelry often causes injury to the person wearing it or to someone else and Gum/candy can cause them to choke.
Conduct yourself properly in class and in the locker room. No horseplay or profane language will be tolerated.
STUDENT EXPECTATIONS
1. Students are to remain seated by their locker in the locker rooms until class has ended. Not standing by the office or doors. If a student chooses to leave the locker room without permission they will receive a detention to be served that day or the next day.. This includes getting a drink.
2. Since classes are coed, shorts will be over the hip and shirts will extend to shorts during class.
3. Students are to use their own towel, deodorant and other personal hygiene items.
4. Students are to remove street clothing & jewelry and lock them inside a locker during class.
5. Students are to be safety conscious in the shower and gym area.
6. For safety reasons, talking is to be minimal in the weight room.
7. For obvious safety reasons, students are to tie their shoes for class activities, regardless of current fashions.
8. Students are encouraged to take clothing home at the end of each week so that it can be properly laundered.
9. Only plastic shampoo, deodorant, hair spray, and cologne/perfume bottles are allowed in the locker room.
10. Students are required to report injuries to their teacher immediately.
MAKE-UP REQUIREMENTS: (Students will have 2 weeks upon returning to class to make up days missed)
Make up time must be clearly discussed with the instructor, students have options:( complete one activity for one day)

- 1 mile run outside. Continuous movement for full credit.
- 10 minute jog. Continuous movement for full credit.
- Elliptical (2 miles in 11 minutes or complete 3 miles total no time limit.
- Arc Trainer (1 mile no time, settings at 12 and 24)
- Bike ( 20 minutes )
